Poor PS3. Not only is Sony's next-gen console getting roundly shafted by the Wii and the Xbox 360, Sony is still shifting four times as many units of its younger sibling, the PS2. According to Reuters, the PS2 is now so cheap that new markets are opening up in Eastern Europe, and in the US the aging console is considered an impulse buy.
Sony has learned its lesson from the PS1/PS2 switchover, too "What happened last time with PS1 is that they left a lot of money on the table by making the transition too quickly," said Sony's European games boss David Reeves, "We are committing funds for PS2 ... we encourage third parties to continue development for PS2. If they bring a PS3 version out, they can bring a PS2 version out as well."
Sony sees another three to four years of life for the PS2, which has sold over 100 million units since 2000. Perhaps by then Sony will actually be making money on the Playstation 3.
