New technology brings jobs to Wilmington

WILMINGTON -- New jobs will soon be coming to the area, thanks to some new technology announced at the corning plant Wednesday.
Officials say a new type of wire will make the flow of information faster, cheaper and better -- and it will be manufactured right here in Wilmington.
Corning's new type of wiring will easily bend around corners. It will be crafted from copper and fibers that allow for more flexibility. Data will be able to pass through the wire uninterrupted.
The federal communications commission chairman was at the plant today. He says changes in regulations lead to the new technology.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said, "It's certainly exciting to see the new technology and the potential that it has to deliver new services to people. But what was most exciting was to get to come down here to Wilmington and meet some of the people who have been laid off in 2002, 2003 and companies weren't buying fiber anymore, and now that they've been re-employed here at the plant."
Officials with Corning say both the fiber optic wire and its installation will be low cost to companies and households.
Corning officials say the biggest benefit to you at home is that this technology will improve internet connections and will allow for more HD-TV channels.
